A mini crossword is small enough that one sure answer can influence much of the board. In Mini Mystery, each 5×5 grid has three Across and three Down entries joined by crossings. Start with an answer you can justify, then use its letters as evidence for the others.
A worked grid from the original practice collection
The example below reveals one Mini Mystery practice grid. It is not an official NYT puzzle, and it is not necessarily the featured Daily board. If you prefer to solve it yourself first, use the clues before opening the answer.
| Direction | Position | Teaching clue |
|---|---|---|
| Across | Top row | A wading bird or a machine for lifting beams |
| Across | Middle row | A component that lets electrical current pass mainly one way |
| Across | Bottom row | A race in which team members take successive stages |
| Down | Left column | An apple drink, which may be hard or soft |
| Down | Middle column | A ring-shaped coral island surrounding a lagoon |
| Down | Right column | A poem of mourning |

Across: CRANE, DIODE, RELAY. Down: CIDER, ATOLL, ELEGY. The four black squares separate entries; no answer goes through them.
First: let a clear clue give you several letters
If “an apple drink” is familiar, enter CIDER down the left column. It supplies the first letter of all three Across answers: C, D and R. You now have more than a guess about where each word starts.
If the electrical clue is easier for you, DIODE across the middle row gives the third letter of the three Down entries: D, O and E. There is no mandatory order; start where your knowledge is strongest.
Second: use every part of a double-meaning clue
The top clue asks for both a bird and lifting machinery. HERON fits the bird half, but not the second meaning. CRANE fits both and agrees with the crossings. A five-letter word is not correct merely because one half of the clue resembles it.
When a clue has “or” or “also,” ask whether one word genuinely carries both meanings. If it only fits one, keep it as a candidate rather than locking it in mentally.
Third: trace a contradiction back to the uncertain entry
Suppose the top Across answer seems right but the first Down word becomes impossible. Recheck the least certain clue. Do not erase a whole area or force the Down answer to become a nonword just to preserve an early guess.
Each shared square has one letter. Across and Down are not separate layers that can hold different letters. Select the square and use Switch direction—or select the corresponding clue—to inspect the other entry.
Choose check or reveal deliberately
Check Letter is the smallest diagnostic; Check Word tests the selected entry; Check Grid looks across entered letters. Auto-check supplies ongoing error feedback. Reveal Letter or Word supplies an answer instead of diagnosing your guess. These are all assistance and are recorded accordingly.
For learning, first make your own attempt, then check only the area where the evidence conflicts. Read the completed explanation after a reveal. For an unaided attempt, leave these tools off and solve from clues and crossings.
