How to follow a trail

Find words related to the clue. Tap neighboring letters, or drag across them, then submit. Letters may connect horizontally, vertically or diagonally and the path can bend. You cannot reuse a cell within a word, and found words do not share cells. Tap the last selected letter again to submit; Undo removes one letter.

Every letter belongs to a theme word. One special word or phrase describes the whole set: its gold trail touches opposite edges of the board. You can find this spanning theme word at any point. If repeated letters offer another spelling route, it is accepted when the remaining words can still cover the board.

Theme hint explains the connection. Trail hint first marks a starting cell, then reveals one word's full path on a second press. Hints mark the score as assisted. Practice is untimed and begins with the theme hint. Daily resets at midnight New York time; Unlimited lets you choose a theme and level.

The clock starts with the first game action and stops while the tab is hidden. Hide clock changes visibility only. Progress stays in this browser when storage is available.

Unlimited paths through an original library
Color Trails Unlimited gives you repeat play from our finite original board library, with theme and difficulty choices. It is an independent alternative for players seeking more Colorful Strands-style puzzles, not a copy of an official NYT set.
Build the session you want
  1. Select a theme and difficulty, then deal a board. Start broad if a combination has no matching board.
  2. Read the theme clue. Follow neighboring letters horizontally, vertically or diagonally; a word can bend.
  3. Submit a complete word. Found theme words stay marked, and the spanning theme word has its own highlight.
  4. Continue until every letter belongs to a found word, then inspect the explanations and deal another board.
Practice, hints and replay
Practice removes time pressure. Hints offer help while marking the result as assisted. Selecting the same cell twice in one word is invalid; undo or clear a path when it crosses itself. A repeat session can reuse a board after the library is exhausted; unlimited sessions do not mean infinitely many distinct authored grids.
Share the board, preserve the puzzle
The result includes an exact-board challenge link. Give that link to a friend to play the same letters and theme. It does not unlock official content or create a verified leaderboard.
